Our Church History

Community Baptist Church Of Gordon Heights was founded by Reverend W. H Powell on October 16th, 1953.

On October 16th,1956 Reverend Washington H.Powell and a group of seven met on Seymour Lane to organize what is now known as Community Baptist Church Of Gordon Heights. We organized and started worship in a very small building that would only seat about twenty-five people for which we had to pay $20.00 amonth rent. At the time we could only raise $4.00 a week, so it was left for us to pay the expense out of our pockets.

Our congregation  had grown so we had to rent another building for $40.00 a month, we stayed in this building until we purchased the land where we are presently on.

During our stay there, every time we were able to pay one price, our land lord would raise our expense to a height that kept us in strain and struggle until finally on June 1st, 1957, I decided that I would not be forced to pay anymore high rent, so I walked out under the skies in a tent that was better known as "Raggedy Ann,"  which was more or less a place of shade and shelter from the rain. By the grace of God we stayed from June to October and we never lost a single Sunday due to rain. During all the above period of time we were able to have erected the basement and we had cover over it by the time it was cold and we were able to worship there until July 1st 1959 when we moved upstairs into our main edifice. In the year 1969, work was started on the Community youth center, which was also a part of my dream. Ten years later it was completed.
